Exeter appoints new Associate Dean for Medical Education

Professor Laura Mongan
We’re delighted to welcome Professor Laura Mongan to the Medical School in the post of Associate Dean for Medical Education.
Laura joins from the University of Birmingham where she was Head of Education in the School of Medical Sciences, with responsibility for the undergraduate and postgraduate taught programme portfolio. She was also the Academic Lead for Formative Assessment and Learner Development for the Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (MBChB) and Chair of the Health and Concerns Committee.
Professor Mongan said: “I’m very excited to be joining the University of Exeter Medical School to take on this new role. I have a powerful affinity to the small group learning ethos and excellence in student development that are the hallmarks of this great School, and I can’t wait to add to this expertise and commitment.”
Deputy Pro-Vice-Chancellor and Dean of the Exeter Medical School, Professor Richard Holland, said: “I’m delighted to welcome Laura as our new Associate Dean for Medical Education. Laura’s wide medical education experience means she will be a huge asset as we navigate the years ahead – where we anticipate further medical student growth and our own planned curriculum changes, which build on the excellence we have in our Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (BMBS) course.”
Laura was previously an Associate Professor at the University of York and the Hull York Medical School and at the University of Leicester Medical School, holding senior programme leadership roles in both Schools.
She brings with her a range of experiences across undergraduate medical curricula ranging in approach from traditional, integrated, and pure problem-based learning (PBL). She has substantial experience of leadership of curriculum design and development, and her scholarship interests lie in evaluation of approaches to academic support and exploration of experiences at medical school of students from non-traditional backgrounds.
Laura has led and developed teaching in reproductive science and women’s health in early years of medical education and was awarded a University Distinguished Teaching Fellowship.
Laura joins us on 5 April 2025.
