From Wales to the University of Exeter for students given a taste of undergraduate life

The programme was established as part of the SEREN programme, a Welsh Government initiative

One hundred students from West Wales got a valuable insight into life as a University of Exeter student during time spent on campus.

Organised and led by the School and College Engagement Team at the University, the initiative is part of a sustained outreach programme engaging schools and colleges within the Welsh community.

The programme was established as part of the SEREN programme, a Welsh Government initiative, with the aim of encouraging Welsh students to consider progression into top universities across the UK.

The students, all of whom currently attend schools in the state sector, were invited to enjoy a taste of life as a student, living in halls of residence, attending talks and workshops, undertaking research into different subject topics and participating in social activities including ten-pin bowling and an end of programme quiz.

Dr Karl Devincenzi, Schools Relationship Manager for the University of Exeter said: “We are delighted to be able to offer such a wonderful experience for these students to experience campus life, provide a brief introduction to higher education, meet new people and explore new subjects they may be interested in studying.  Our collaboration and partnership with SEREN continues to flourish and we hope to be able to provide more opportunities in the forthcoming academic year.”

Bethan Jones-Hughes, SEREN regional lead said: “The residential in Exeter brought together learners from across the region, allowing them a real glimpse into university life, whilst focussing on challenging and mature research tasks. Our partnership with Exeter is highly valued by our students, teachers and the wider SEREN team, and we are looking forward to growing the opportunities further to support the aspirations of Welsh learners.”
