From Wales to the University of Exeter for students given a taste of undergraduate life
The teenagers, all of who currently attend schools in the state sector, were invited to enjoy a taste of life as a student
One hundred and fifty students from across Wales got a valuable insight into life as a University of Exeter student during time spent on the Streatham campus.
Organised and led by the School and College Engagement Team at the University, the initiative is part of a sustained outreach programme engaging schools and colleges within the Welsh community.
The programme was established in collaboration with the SEREN Academy, a Welsh Government initiative, with the aim of encouraging Welsh students to consider progression into top universities across the UK.
The teenagers, all of whom currently attend state schools, were invited to enjoy a taste of life as a student, living in halls of residence, participating in social activities including a beach visit and an end of programme quiz.
The academic programme encouraged students to consider research skills aligned with work currently undertaken as part of their AS Levels and study of the Welsh Bacc. Students were required to deliver an end of programme presentation to their peers articulating research methodologies and skills acquired.
Dr Karl Devincenzi, Schools Relationship Manager for the University of Exeter said: “Our continued collaboration with colleagues within the SEREN academy allows us to be able to facilitate these fantastic opportunities for students based in Wales.
“Students have experienced campus life, met new people and explored new subjects they may be interested in studying. They have engaged in meaningful research enquiries developing skills which can be translated to other projects and qualifications. Our collaboration and partnership with SEREN continues to flourish and we hope to be able to provide more opportunities in the forthcoming academic year.”
