Exeter experts elected Fellows of the Academy of Social Sciences

Two University of Exeter academics have been recognised as leading figures in their fields following their election as Fellows of the Academy of Social Sciences.

Judith Green, Emeritus Professor in Social and Political Sciences, Philosophy, and Anthropology, and Climent Quintana-Domeque, Professor of Economics, were elected following independent peer review in recognition of their academic excellence and “substantial contributions to social science for public benefit”.

As Fellows they join more than 1,750 leading social scientists from academia, the public, private and third sectors whose expertise covers the breadth of the social sciences and whose practice and research address some of the major challenges facing communities, society, places and economies.

Professor Quintana-Domeque said he was “delighted and deeply honoured”, adding: “As an applied microeconomist, I use econometric methods to study people’s wellbeing and the effects of public policies, with a particular focus on health, inequality, human capital and gender. I am especially grateful to my mentors, collaborators and students, who have shaped and continue to shape the way I ask questions and think about evidence.”

Professor Green said: “It is an honour to be conferred as a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences in recognition of my contributions to the sociology of health, including work on risk, public health and methodology. Robust, critical social science is vital for understanding and managing the challenges of contemporary life, and I have championed applied sociology and interdisciplinary research across my career.”

President of the Academy of Social Sciences, Will Hutton FAcSS, added: “Our newest Fellows represent some of the most influential voices in social science today. Their work is expanding knowledge, challenging assumptions and generating insights that are informing and even redefining decision making across government, business, education and civil society. I am delighted to welcome them to the Academy and look forward to working with them to raise the profile and impact of the social sciences across the UK and beyond.”
