Congratulations to the current University of Exeter students and alumni competing at the 2024 Olympics in Paris.

FdSc Coaching and Fitness student Jess Buchanan was part of the Team GB squad who reached the quarterfinals in the women’s hockey, losing to eventual finalists Netherlands.

Meanwhile, BSc Environmental Science student Charlotte Webster competed for Cayman Islands in the women’s dinghy event and placed 41st overall after the weather interrupted some of her racing in Marseille.

“Competing in Paris 2024 has been a dream come true after three and a half years of hard work, and I’m immensely grateful for this amazing journey,” Charlotte wrote on Facebook.

“Racing against the world’s top female sailors this week in Marseille was incredible, and their fierce competition had driven me to give my all. While the final results had their ups and downs, I’m incredibly proud to be a Caymanian Olympian and join the ranks of those who set the bar for sports on our island.

“A huge thank you to everyone who made this journey possible, especially my parents and family and friends for supporting me as I balanced university and sailing. It hasn’t been easy, but with their unwavering support, I made it!”

BA Philosophy and Politics student Freya Black was also on the water in France, competing at her first ever Olympic Games alongside Saskia Tidy in the women’s skiff 49erFX class.

After ranking 16th in qualifying the Great Britain pair didn’t make the top ten and progress to the medals race.

Finally, honorary Exeter graduate Dina Asher-Smith was part of the 4x100m women’s relay team who claimed silver for Team GB.

Dina was also just outside the medals in the women’s 200m, finishing fourth by just three-hundredths of a second. She competed in the 100m too, but didn’t make the final.
