Staff in health-related subjects at the University of Exeter have been awarded prizes by their students for commitment to inclusive learning, academic excellence, and outstanding support.

The annual staff prize-giving event celebrates teaching in health-related subjects in the University’s Faculty of Health and Life Sciences. Students award tutors’ efforts to provide innovative teaching experiences, inclusive learning environments and pastoral support. In a ceremony held at Reed Hall, Streatham campus last night, staff were celebrated under the categories of ‘Most Inspirational Teacher’, ‘Educational Inspirer’ and a ‘Supporting Hand’.

Students hailed Dr Talitha Kerrigan, who picked up the ‘Neuroscience Educational Inspirer’ award, as  supportive, going above and beyond and inspiring a student to consider a career path in Neuroimmunology.

The ‘BMBS Supporting Hand’ Prize went to Andrea Freeman, who was dubbed the ‘Greatest of all Time’ by a student for being friendly, approachable, and keen to assist with workplace-based assessments.

The ‘Medical Sciences Most Inspirational Teacher’ award was presented to Dr Alex Clarke for his interactive teaching style, which students said simplified complex topics and fostered an enjoyable learning experience.

Dr Owen Tomlinson was awarded the ‘Sports and Medical Sciences Supporting Hand’ prize for consistently providing guidance and assisting students with transition into university life.

Dr Hope Gangata’s efforts in training students on the anatomy of dissection was rewarded with the ‘Medical Sciences Educational Inspirer’ prize. The students praised Dr Gangata for detailed explanation of various organs which stimulated a deeper understanding of the anatomy of the human body.

Professor Richard Holland, Dean of the University of Exeter Medical School, said: “It’s always wonderful to see our talented staff recognised by their students. These prizes are genuinely heartwarming, and I congratulate all our staff for continuing to provide such high-quality education that inspires our students and community.”
