Comment on education policy announcement
The South-West Social Mobility Commission is an innovative ‘do-tank’ that is pioneering a new approach to improving social mobility at a regional level.
Commenting on the education policy announcement made by Education Secretary Lucy Powell, Lee Elliot Major, Professor of Social Mobility in the School of Education, said:
“Despite improvements in academic standards, our education system is still failing a significant minority of pupils who leave school without the qualifications, skills or confidence they need to thrive. Stark attainment gaps remain a scar on our education system. We cannot claim success while so many young people are still being left behind.
“In an age of artificial intelligence, the ability to communicate, collaborate and advocate for yourself will become increasingly important. Schools have a vital role in making these skills accessible to all pupils whatever their background.
“The challenge is not to choose between academic rigour and practical skills, but to create a curriculum that values both developing knowledge alongside creativity, communication and the skills young people need to thrive.
“We must be careful not to turn oracy into another test of social advantage. The aim should be to help every young person find their voice, developing the confidence to express themselves, listen and advocate for themselves.”
