Subjects across the academic spectrum at the University of Exeter have been ranked among the world’s best according to a new league table, published this week.

Seven broad disciplinary areas have been placed inside the world’s top 150 of Times Higher Education’s World University Rankings 2025.

Among these areas, Arts and Humanities – covering Languages, Literature, History, Philosophy, Theology and Archaeology – is ranked 82nd in the world, retaining its 2024 position inside the top 100.

Physical Sciences, which accounts for Maths and Physics, improved on its previous year by moving into the 101-125 band.

The five other subject areas ranked inside the top 100 by THE were Education (126-150); Engineering (126-150); Life Sciences (101-125); Psychology (101-125); and Social Sciences (126-150).

These subject rankings are based upon the THE World University Rankings 2025, released in October 2024, which placed Exeter 172nd out of 2,092 institutions.

The rankings evaluate university performance across five key areas: teaching, research environment, research quality, industry engagement and international outlook. They include millions of citations and research publications, and the responses of surveys from more than 93,000 scholars globally.
