The University of Exeter has won recognition at the Exeter Sustainability Awards.

Gift it Reuse it – a flagship scheme that allows students leaving halls of residence to donate unwanted household items to new students – won first place in the educational organisation category.

Run by the University’s Sustainability and Commercial, Residential & Campus Services teams, Gift it Reuse operates every summer (and sometimes more than once a year).

Last summer, it diverted 8,554 items for reuse.

The University’s Technical Strategy team also had success at the awards – being highly commended for their Sustainable Labs work, which promotes energy efficiency, waste reduction, recycling and responsible material use in research environments.

Joanna Chamberlain, the University’s Director of Sustainability, said: “Our success at the Exeter Sustainability Awards is great recognition of our work to help create a more sustainable future.

“A heartfelt thank you to everyone involved – your dedication and hard work made this achievement possible.”

Launched in 2022, the Exeter Sustainability Awards recognise people, businesses and organisations that make a difference to sustainability in Exeter.

The awards ceremony was held on Friday 21 March at The Hall in Exeter.
