The University of Exeter and the Ocean Conservation Trust (OCT) have signed a new partnership agreement to work together on some of the biggest challenges facing our ocean.

The new Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) brings together Exeter’s world-leading expertise in marine science and marine biology with OCT’s pioneering work in ocean conservation, education and public engagement.

Together, the organisations will explore new ways to protect marine environments, inspire the next generation of ocean advocates and strengthen the South-West region’s reputation as a global centre for marine science and innovation.

Professor Lisa Roberts, President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Exeter said: “Protecting the future of our oceans requires collaboration, innovation and public engagement at every level.

“This partnership brings together our globally-recognised marine research expertise with the Ocean Conservation Trust’s excellent work in conservation and education.

“Together, we have an exciting opportunity to drive forward research and innovation, inspire future generations, and strengthen the South West region’s position as a world-leading centre for marine science and ocean conservation.”

The partnership will focus on four key areas:

• Promoting South West England as a world-leading marine science hub

• Supporting education and ocean advocacy

• Advancing research, innovation and new technologies

• Expanding inclusivity and accessibility in marine education and conservation

The collaboration is expected to include joint research projects, technology development, public engagement programmes and new opportunities to connect communities with the ocean.

Ian McFadzen, CEO of the Ocean Conservation Trust said: “The formation of this partnership marks an important step forward in our shared commitment to protecting the ocean for generations to come. By bringing together the Ocean Conservation Trust’s on-the-ground conservation expertise with the University of Exeter’s world-class

research and marine biology innovation, we can accelerate meaningful action for marine recovery, resilience, and sustainability.

“Partnerships like this are essential if we are to address the challenges facing our ocean at the scale and pace that’s now required. Together, we can inspire new ideas, strengthen the work of both organisations, and create a lasting positive impact for our ocean, communities, and for the planet as a whole.”

The Memorandum of Understanding was signed at a special ceremony on Wednesday, May 27th.

The University of Exeter is internationally recognised for its cutting-edge marine research, tackling issues ranging from climate change and biodiversity loss to sustainable fisheries and ocean health.

Based in Plymouth, the Ocean Conservation Trust works to reconnect people with the ocean through conservation, habitat restoration, education and research initiatives that drive positive environmental change.
