University climbs in Times Higher Education’s prestigious global rankings
The University of Exeter has made a significant jump in one of higher education’s most influential international league tables.
A rise of 13 places means Exeter is now placed joint 157th in The Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2027 out of more than 2,000 institutions worldwide.
The University’s national position has also improved, climbing three places to joint 19th in the top 20.
The rankings are based on five key metrics: Teaching; Research Environment; Research Quality; Industry; and International Outlook. And it’s an improvement in Teaching this year – a rise of 81 places – that has driven Exeter’s 2027 success.
Exeter’s best-performing pillar is Research Quality, in which the University is ranked 51st, followed by International Outlook at 78th. Research Environment also improved by 28 places this year to just outside the top 200.

Exeter’s rise in the THE table follows its placement in the top 20 of two earlier national university guides. It is ranked 16th in the UK in both the 2027 Guardian University Guide and The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide – reinforcing its position among the UK’s best universities.
