Exeter healthcare modelling pioneer awarded prestigious Beale Medal 

An Exeter Professor has been awarded a prestigious award for his contributions to the practice and application of Operational Research (OR).  

Professor Martin Pitt, Emeritus Professor of Applied Healthcare Modelling and Data Science at the University of Exeter Medical School, has been awarded the prestigious Beale Medal by The Operational Research Society. The award recognised Professor Pitt’s pioneering work in healthcare modelling and analytics.  

In 2010, Professor Pitt was instrumental in establishing the Peninsula Collaboration for Health Operational Research and Data Science (PenCHORD) within the NIHR Applied Research Collaboration South West (ARC SW). As director of PenCHORD until 2025, he oversaw a programme of collaborative research that has become widely recognised as a leading example of embedded Operational Research within healthcare.  

Reflecting on the recognition of the award, Professor Pitt said: “It’s a massive honour to receive this award and join such a distinguished line of previous recipients. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed bringing people and professional communities together to improve patient care through the application of Operational Research. To that extent this award belongs as much to the wonderful colleagues who have accompanied me along the way as to myself.” 

Professor Pitt’s research has had particular impact in the development and practical application of simulation modelling to guide healthcare policy, helping healthcare organisations to understand complex systems and make better-informed decisions. His publications have combined methodological innovation with practical implementation to ensure that Operational Research techniques are accessible and relevant.  

The award, presented on 9th September 2026 at the Society’s annual Awards Ceremony at the University of Nottingham, is named in memory of E. M. L. Beale and gives formal recognition to a sustained contribution by one person to operational research in the United Kingdom. The term ‘Operational Research’ refers to the application of scientific methods to analyse and improve effectiveness across a range of sectors. As further part of the award, Professor Pitt has been invited to organise and deliver the Beale Lecture in the early spring of 2027.  

The Operational Research Society have emphasised the profound and multifaceted impact of Professor Pitt’s research, writing that ‘his research has consistently addressed real-world challenges faced by healthcare organisations and policymakers.’ They concluded: “Through his research, leadership and commitment to implementation, he’s helped establish Operational Research as an essential component of modern healthcare improvement. Professor Martin Pitt’s sustained contribution to the application of Operational Research in healthcare has had a profound impact on both the profession and the health sector. His work exemplifies the spirit of the Beale Medal, and he’s a highly deserving recipient of this award.”
