University of Exeter to support businesses in Somerset with new ‘Innovation Hub’
Launch event of the Somerset Innovation Hub at the Firepool Centre for Digital Innovation in Taunton
The University of Exeter is reaching into Somerset to support businesses and economic growth through the launch of a new Innovation Hub.
The Somerset Innovation Hub, led by Exeter Innovation in collaboration with Somerset Council and SETsquared Bath, will help businesses across Somerset harness innovation, develop new products and services, and drive regional economic growth.
From its base at the Firepool Centre for Digital Innovation in Taunton, the Innovation Hub will deliver a two-year programme of innovation services and events that support Somerset’s entrepreneurs, start-ups and established businesses.
The Hub aims to support and strengthen business innovation in Somerset by connecting businesses with expert guidance, training and university-led support.
It will also bring together regional stakeholders, entrepreneurs and innovators to help build a thriving and collaborative business community.
Colin Dart, Business Acceleration Programme Manager at Exeter Innovation, said, “This is about creating a connected and collaborative space where ideas can take shape and businesses can learn from each other.
“By working closely with Somerset Council, SETsquared Bath, and the wider innovation community, we can help local enterprises overcome challenges, explore new technologies, and turn great ideas into commercial success.”
The Hub was launched earlier this month at the Invest Somerset, Digital Showcase, with opening events to help participants explore business model development.
Further events will be held throughout the region, alongside one-to-one bespoke business support available from December.
Businesses will be able to access tailored advice on business modelling, technology exploration, and sector-specific programmes. For businesses ready to accelerate their growth, there are opportunities to join the Exeter Innovation Accelerator, based at Exeter Science Park, which provides access to vital knowledge, networks and investment opportunities.
Sarah Brady, Innovation Lead at Somerset Council, said: “The launch of the Somerset Innovation Hub reflects our commitment to supporting business growth and innovation. By connecting SMEs, founders, and entrepreneurs with expert support and collaboration opportunities, we’ll be unlocking new opportunities for Somerset’s innovative and ambitious business community.”
The Somerset Innovation Hub is part-funded by the UK Government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund and forms part of Exeter’s wider commitment to support innovation and prosperity across the South West.
