The University of Exeter and the Emirate of Sharjah have strengthened their longstanding partnership with the launch of a new programme to support the development of talent across the Government of Sharjah.

The Sharjah National Talents Programme was launched yesterday (5 October) at the headquarters of the Sharjah Council for Higher Education and Scientific Research, in the presence of His Highness Sheikh Dr Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member of the UAE and Ruler of Sharjah.

The Sharjah National Talents Programme has been developed to support the skills, knowledge and leadership capabilities of employees across the Government of Sharjah, with academic learning closely connected to participants’ professional roles.  It is anticipated that up to 500 civil servants will join an array of bespoke post-graduate courses at Exeter over the next five years.

Participants will undertake a flexible hybrid learning experience, supported by academics and experienced professionals. The programme combines academic study with practical training, applied projects and individual mentoring.

Professor Lisa Roberts, President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Exeter, attended the event, which marked the latest development in a relationship between Exeter and Sharjah that has grown over four decades.

Professor Roberts said: “We are honoured to co-design and deliver this groundbreaking programme, the result of His Highness’ vision and philanthropic commitment.  We are particularly delighted that the next generation of Sharjah government leaders will study at His Highness’ alma mater.”

The new programme builds on a series of collaborations between Exeter and organisations across Sharjah.  These include the COMPASS Leadership Programme, developed by Exeter in partnership with the Sharjah Council for Higher Education and Scientific Research to support leadership, governance and institutional development across higher education.

Exeter also has established academic and research collaborations in Sharjah in areas including marine sciences, education, geology and social sciences, reflecting the breadth of the relationship between the University and the Emirate.
